National Dog Day was founded in 2004 and falls on August 26th annually. The day was founded to celebrate all dogs regardless of mixed breed or pure. To us, the best way to celebrating man’s best friend is ensuring that they are protected from fleas and ticks that may cause them discomfort.

Fall Flea Prevention

Summer is winding down and autumn is nearly here. Fleas tend to surge within the fall in most areas and, in some studies, animals were found to have 70 percent more fleas attached to them than during this time period than in the spring. Given the climate and precipitation levels during this season, fleas are given optimal conditions to thrive.

Pet Flea Control

There are several consumer grade products available to help remove ticks from pets in a safe manner. Products can range from once-a-month topical applications to collars, shampoos or oral products. It is important to remain persistent in treating your pet until the problem is completely gone. Fleas have to come in contact with the product to be eradicated.

Indoor Flea Control

Indoor flea control is one of the most important parts of removing a flea infestation. Fleas leave eggs away from the host, generally in carpet or cracks, to mature. To remove immature flea forms, vacuum regularly and thoroughly to remove all eggs. Using an insecticide that is safe for your pet will also help eradicate remaining fleas. Don’t forget to wash your pet’s bedding weekly and treat areas surrounding it.

Outdoor Flea Control

Fleas are notorious for taking up residence in organic debris, this is particularly true during autumn when trees begin shedding their leaves. Rake these items up to disturb any potential flea habitats you may be fostering within your yard. Rodents carry fleas and are more apt to begin traveling to homes when the weather begins to drop. Discourage their arrival by removing food sources and taking preventative measures.
